Quotables
"There's so much ego involved in dog fighting, but why? It's not a skill, it's not something you get accolades for. You don't really get anything good out of it, so go find a way to satisfy your ego in a way that doesn't harm animals or other people. And maybe helps some people out instead. You can feed your ego and do good at the same time." - Feb 21, 2010; Essence Magazine

Vick Headed to the Panthers?
Could Michael Vick be going to the Carolina Panthers? The Panthers were not interested in him last year and probably will not be interested in him this year. Though the Panthers move to let go starting quarterback Jake Delhomme has people talking again about Michael Vick.

On a talk show this weekend Vick proclaimed Carolina was his top choice to play for. He cited that it was close to home and also would be the start of a new rival playing the Atlanta Falcons twice a year. His former team, Atlanta let Vick go after his trouble with the law.

Michael Vick sat out two years of professional football when he was incarcerated on dog fighting charges. He returned last year when the Philadelphia Eagles picked him up. He was sparingly used in the Eagles offense and is looking for a starting position.

Episode 5 Recap
Starting the NFL season suspended, Michael Vick heads home to Virginia, where seeing his son, Mitez, is his first priority. It’s very important for Michael to be there for Mitez because Michael’s father wasn’t there for him. His father, Michael Boddie, was a hard drug user who was in and out of his family’s life. Because of this, Mr. Boddie has taken steps to put his past behind him and rebuild relationships with all of his children, leading to the first-ever dinner between Michael and Marcus Vick and their father. At dinner, the strain is evident, but all three men do their best to move forward with their relationships in a positive manner.

While at home, Michael takes the time to visit his childhood mentor, Pooh Johnson, from his childhood refuge, The Boys and Girls Club. Michael and Pooh talk about keeping the fees for the kids extremely low so that they can all receive the same mentoring that Michael and his brother did as kids. As always, Michael will pick up the difference. They also discuss paying off the last $40,000 of the club’s mortgage and Michael and Pooh talk about ways to raise the money before heading out to his old football field to talk to the new crop of aspiring football stars. After watching practice and offering quarterbacking tips, Michael talks to the kids and inspires them to stay on the straight and narrow, both on and off the field.

Here’s a candid photo that I thought was pretty cool. It’s a pic of the Eagles coming out on to the field before a game.

Episode 4 Recap
In a speech at a high school only blocks away from a recent dogfighting bust, Michael Vick takes his anti-dogfighting message to Philadelphia’s youth. Via an introduction by Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle, Michael’s developing role as an HSUS spokesperson is explained. According to Pacelle, he originally wanted Vick prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But when Vick approached him while still incarcerated, Pacelle recognized the heartfelt change in the humbled football superstar and an earnest wish to help eradicate dogfighting nationwide.

Taking the microphone on stage, Michael explains how much he’s learned in his few months working with The Humane Society and how he never should’ve been involved in dogfighting to begin with. He then harkens back to what got him started with dogfighting, and the scene shifts back to the Ridley Circle projects. There, on a tour with childhood best friend Kevin Stanley, the two men talk about their common bond of sports and the everyday nature of seeing two dogs fight. Michael then expounds upon his initiation into the dogfighting culture and how it developed into a dogfighting ring after meeting fellow Newport News native, Tony Taylor.
